Risk Analysis
Find out how much risk is actually in your portfolio, and whether it matches the amount you meant to take.
What is risk?
Risk is what you can withstand, not what you can tolerate on a good day.
Risk tolerance is a measure of your financial ability to withstand losses. Not your appetite for them in a rising market, which is a different and much more flattering number.
Risk cannot be removed from a portfolio, and trying to remove it introduces costs of its own. What you can do is make sure the risk you are carrying is the risk you intended, and that it is paired with a reward worth having. That is the difference between a portfolio you hold through a bad quarter and one you abandon at the worst possible moment.
The right level is personal. It moves with your stage of life, your obligations, your timeline and your temperament, and it is worth rechecking as those change.
Your Risk Number
The questionnaire below produces a single number between 1 and 99. It describes the amount of risk you are comfortable carrying, in a form that can be compared directly against what your current portfolio is actually doing.
- 1
- 25
- 50
- 75
- 99
A number on its own settles nothing. What it does is turn a vague conversation about comfort into a specific one about holdings.

Answer a few questions. Get your number.
The questionnaire asks how you would respond to specific gains and losses on a portfolio of your size, which is a more reliable signal than asking how you feel about risk in the abstract.
Find your Risk Number
The assessment opens in a new tab. Your result is shown to you as soon as you finish.

What happens next
A number, then a conversation.
Step one
You get your number
The questionnaire returns your Risk Number as soon as you finish it. It is yours whether or not you ever speak to us.
Step two
We compare it to your portfolio
Send us your current holdings and we will show you the risk your portfolio is actually carrying, next to the number you just produced.
Step three
We talk about the gap, if there is one
Sometimes the two match and there is nothing to do. When they do not, the difference is specific enough to act on.
Would rather do this with a person?
Some people would, and that is a reasonable preference for a set of questions about money. Call 719-332-3863 or send us a message and Dan will walk through it with you.
